Introduction

Native Americans have been and continue to be a vital force in the history and present of New Mexico. Since the advent of the first Spanish colony in New Mexico in 1598, interactions with Native Americans have directly affected the quality of life of these new settlers whose descendants are known as New Mexicans. These interactions are documented in a variety of collections held by the Archives and Historical Services Division.

Scope

The purpose of this pathfinder is to provide patrons with a list of document and photograph collections that pertain to Native Americans in the collections of the Archives and Historical Services Division. Collection information was culled from collection-level descriptive records. These records and more detailed listings of collection content (finding aids/inventories) are accessible at https://www.srca.nm.gov via the Archives and Historical Services Division online catalog of collections.

Note: Collections that contain materials pertaining to Native Americans that are not mentioned in the collection-level description records are not included in this listing.
